Nitrous Oxide Sedation
One of the most popular forms of Pediatric Sedation Dentistry is Nitrous Oxide, more commonly known as “laughing gas.” This safe gas is inhaled through a small breathing mask and provides an instant relaxation effect. Your child will be awake but will experience happy feelings while under the effect of the gas. Once the nitrous mask is removed, your child will return to normal within minutes and can continue with their day. Dr. Julia Springfield Polomski recommends that children who undergo oral sedation not eat for at least two hours before their treatment.
IV Sedation Dentistry

What Is IV Sedation Dentistry?

General anesthesia puts your child into a gentle, restful sleep, allowing them to rest through the treatment and have no memory of it afterward.
What to Do After Sedation Dentistry
Before the procedure, you and your child will be given a set of instructions to follow in order to ensure the best possible experience. After the procedure, your child will be discharged once the sedation wears off and they become more alert. Please note that no two children will take exactly the same amount of time to become alert, so it’s hard to say exactly when you can expect to leave the dental office together. Once you do leave, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Your child may still feel some effects of the sedation, such as grogginess or nausea, so they will need to rest for the remainder of the day.
- Make sure your child only eats soft foods for several hours after the procedure, and monitor what they eat to ensure they don’t accidentally bite their tongue.
- If your child experiences symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding, vomiting, or fever for more than 24 hours after the procedure, call us right away.
